Generalized Utilitarianism and Harsanyi ’ S Impartial Observer Theorem

چکیده
We provide an axiomatization of generalized utilitarian social welfare functions in the context of Harsanyis impartial observer theorem. To do this, we reformulate Harsanyis problem such that lotteries over identity (accidents of birth) and lotteries over outcomes (life chances) are independent. We show how to accommodate ( rst) Diamonds critique concerning fairness and (second) Pattanaiks critique concerning di¤ering attitudes toward risk. In each case, we show what separates them from Harsanyi by showing what extra axioms return us to Harsanyi. Thus we provide two new axiomatizations of Harsanyis utilitarianism.. Keywords: generalized utilitarianism, impartial observer, social welfare function, fairness, ex ante egalitarianism. Fairness and Utilitarianism without Independence
In this work we reconsider Harsanyis celebrated (1953, 1955, 1977) utilitarian impartial observer theorem. Departing from Harsanyis individual-centered approach, we argue that, when societal decisions are at stake, postulates must not be drawn from individualistic behavior. Rather, they should be based on societal norms. Hence, notions like societal fairness should explicitly be taken as the ...
متن کاملGeneralized Utilitarianism: accidents of birth, life chances and Harsanyi's impartial observer theorem
We provide an axiomatization of generalized utilitarian social welfare functions in the context of Harsanyi's impartial observer theorem. We reformulate Harsanyi's problem to allow the impartial observer to distinguish between imaginary randomizations over identity (accidents of birth) and real randomizations over outcomes (life chances). We show how to accommodate ( rst) Diamond's critique con...

متن کاملMeasurement-Theoretic Foundations of Preference Aggregation Logic for Weighted Utilitarianism
Harsanyi [4, 5] develops expected utility theory of von Neumann and Morgenstern [21] to provide two formalizations of utilitarianism. Weymark [22, 23] refers to these results as Harsanyi’s Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems. In this paper, we are concerned only with Aggregation Theorem. Sen [6] argues that von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility theory is an ordinal theory and, theref...
متن کاملA reconsideration of the Harsanyi-Sen-Weymark debate on utilitarianism
Harsanyi claimed that his Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems provide a justification for utilitarianism. This claim has been strongly resisted, notably by Sen and Weymark; the latter argue that Harsanyi has shown only that there exists a representation of the social preference ordering that is formally utilitarian in structure, not that utilitarianism itself is true. One prominent thre...
